Sixty-three characters on Elwynn are level 60 right now. Not one of them owns a single piece of raid gear. We checked, against the item database, not against memory: 174,936 items exist on the realm, and the query that finds epic items at item level 60 or higher comes back with world drops, dungeon drops, and crafted gear. No tier pieces. No Molten Core trinkets. No Onyxia cloak. Zero.
That is not a bug and it is not us being behind. It is where the realm is. Elwynn runs a progression gate, and the number that controls it currently reads zero. At that setting, Molten Core, Onyxia's Lair, Zul'Gurub, Blackwing Lair, both Ahn'Qiraj raids, and Naxxramas are all sealed. You can watch the number change on the progression page, and this article stops being accurate the moment it moves.
Why the usual BiS lists do not work here
Wowhead and Icy Veins are not wrong. They write for Classic Era and for private servers that already have raids open, and for those realms their lists are accurate. The problem is not the lists, it is the assumption underneath them: that a level 60 character has a raid tier to aim for. On Elwynn today, nobody does. A guide that recommends a Molten Core drop is not aspirational here, it is wrong information dressed up as a plan.
So this is a different question: not "what is BiS in Vanilla", but what is actually the best gear an Elwynn character can put on today. That answer comes from four places, and only four: five-man dungeons, which are all open; crafting, where a pattern exists and the materials can be farmed; world drops, which carry no instance lock at all; and reputation vendors, though the strongest pieces we can point to this round come from the other three.
Everything below was checked entry by entry against the realm's own item table — item level, required level, quality, and where it matters, exactly which creature drops it or which pattern teaches it. If we could not confirm where something comes from, it is not in this list, and where we are less sure than usual, the row says so.
Melee DPS
Runeblade of Baron Rivendare drops from the final boss of Stratholme, still one of the hardest five-man pulls in the game and still fully open. It is, for what it is worth, the single strongest weapon currently owned by anyone on the realm. Ironfoe comes off Emperor Dagran Thaurissan at the end of Blackrock Depths — a long chase with a low drop rate, in an instance that needs no lockout. The two Devilsaur pieces are the clean example of the crafting pipeline: Leatherworking patterns built from a world drop off the devilsaurs in Un'Goro Crater, so nothing about them touches an instance at all.
| Slot | Item | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Hand | Runeblade of Baron Rivendare The strongest weapon anyone on the realm currently owns, and it comes out of a five-man. | Dungeon — Stratholme (Baron Rivendare) | Obtainable |
| Main Hand | Ironfoe A long chase with a low drop rate, in an instance that needs no lockout. | Dungeon — Blackrock Depths (Emperor Dagran Thaurissan) | Obtainable |
| Legs | Devilsaur Leggings Built from a world-drop material, so it needs a supplier rather than a group. | Crafted — Leatherworking | Obtainable |
| Hands | Devilsaur Gauntlets | Crafted — Leatherworking | Obtainable |
| Hands | Gauntlets of Might Looks craftable and is not — this is the mistake a Classic-Era list would import. | Raid — Molten Core (Lucifron) | Obtainable |
Casters
Both robes are Tailoring. Robe of the Archmage leans on Intellect and its pattern drops from Firebrand Pyromancer trash in Blackrock Spire; Robe of the Void leans on the survivability a caster standing too close actually needs, and its pattern comes from Darkmaster Gandling at the end of Scholomance. Crafted either way, which means neither competes with anyone else's loot roll.
| Slot | Item | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chest | Robe of the Archmage | Crafted — Tailoring | Obtainable |
| Chest | Robe of the Void | Crafted — Tailoring | Obtainable |
Healing
Benediction is not a raid drop and never has been. It is reforged from two quest items, and we traced both: the Eye of Divinity comes out of a container sitting in the open world, and the Eye of Shadow drops from demons in the Blasted Lands, most reliably off Lord Kazzak. Neither step touches an instance lock. We have marked the row as less certain than the others on purpose — the chain was traced to its sources, but not every step was confirmed against the realm's own quest data, and we would rather say that than let you find out after the farm.
| Slot | Item | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Hand | BenedictionUncertainThe full chain was traced to an outdoor boss and a Winterspring chest, but not every step was confirmed against the realm's own quest data. | World boss — outdoors, no instance | Obtainable |
Tank
Draconian Deflector drops from General Drakkisath in upper Blackrock Spire. The instance is not on the sealed list; the only thing gated there right now is the shortcut teleport used for the Blackwing Lair attunement, not the wing itself, so a full run to Drakkisath is open exactly like any other five-man.
We do not have a confirmed non-raid plate chest, helm or leg piece worth publishing yet. Several strong-looking candidates turned out, once traced through the loot tables, to be Molten Core or Blackwing Lair drops themselves — Gauntlets of Might is the one we left in the table below, marked as what it is, because it is exactly the mistake a list imported from Classic Era would make. We are not printing a BiS list that quietly points a tank at gear behind a sealed door.
| Slot | Item | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shield | Draconian Deflector Upper Blackrock Spire itself is open; only the Orb shortcut into Blackwing Lair is sealed. | Dungeon — Blackrock Spire | Obtainable |
| Hands | Gauntlets of Might Looks craftable and is not — this is the mistake a Classic-Era list would import. | Raid — Molten Core (Lucifron) | Obtainable |
What changes when the gate moves
Elwynn's gate opens Molten Core and Onyxia's Lair together. Rows that are locked today become obtainable that day, in this same table, without a sentence of this article being rewritten — that is the whole reason the tables are data. What will need writing is the next guide, not a correction to this one.
Questions, corrections, or a source you think we got wrong: come argue about it on Discord. We would rather be told we are wrong than have someone farm a boss for a piece we misattributed.
